A newly registered paramedic (NRP) in the UK is most likely employed in a role where they are responsible for delivering urgent and emergency care, assessing patients, and providing transport when necessary (and within the scope of their role). They work under supervision as part of a one or two-year preceptorship programme designed to build confidence and consolidate skills and knowledge in the context of practice. NRPs collaborate closely with other healthcare professionals, apply clinical guidelines to inform decision-making, and prioritise patient safety. Over time, they gain greater autonomy and progress towards becoming fully independent practitioners. Although the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) holds NRPs to the same standards of proficiency as fully autonomous paramedics, certain elements of their employed role remain slightly restricted. This transitional period allows them to consistently apply their academic knowledge, practical skills, and placement experiences in a safe and confident manner.
