Welcome to this Career Framework tool.
Paramedics play a vital role at the intersection of health and care, public health, and public safety. As healthcare evolves, paramedics are increasingly positioned to bridge gaps, enhance efficiencies, and contribute to the future of integrated care delivery. The NHS People Plan (2021) emphasises the need to grow the paramedic workforce in the coming years and supports the expansion of paramedic roles in primary and urgent care. This initiative will provide greater access to advanced training programmes and continue to establish clear career progression pathways.
While clinical practice is often the starting point for paramedics, career development encompasses growth across all four pillars of practice: clinical, research and development, leadership and management, and education. Every paramedic’s career journey is unique, and developing practice often involves developing knowledge, skills and capabilities across these pillars at different times and in varying proportions.
This third edition of the Interactive Career Framework highlights the diversity of how paramedics integrate these pillars into their roles, reflecting ongoing advancements in the profession. It introduces video-based submissions as the predominant medium, offering a dynamic and engaging resource. In developing this framework, we engaged extensively with our members to ensure it captures the breadth and diversity of the profession. Starting with over 30 case studies, it illustrates the wide range of roles paramedics fulfil and provides comprehensive guidance for career progression.
